first impressions
TL;DR: Wriothesley [RISE-lee] (you may call him "Your Grace") is the low-key and dependable warden and administrator of the Fortress of Meropide, the justice-obsessed nation of Fontaine's grim underwater answer to jail - though it's more like a self-contained city of exiles, and he's their mayor.
VISUAL: Link. A tall and broad-shouldered man in his mid-30s? (headcanon based on passage of time implied in his lore), fair, with ice-blue eyes and thick dark hair streaked with premature gray. Thick thighs and biceps, slim at the waist. He has scars all over his body, visible at his neck, on his arms, and beneath his right eye, though he keeps the most shocking at least partially covered. His appearance is well-kempt and his clothing is clearly tailored and expensive, but under natural light, he has a pallor to his skin that suggests he hasn't seen much of the sun in many years.
AURAL: Link. Deep and masculine. Confident and self-assured, even cocky at times. Commanding and kind in equal measure, passingly intellectual, otherwise direct and down-to-earth in his speech.
OLFACTORY: Rusted metal and sea salt. Tea leaves. Subtle cologne with notes of musk and marines.
DEMEANOUR: From afar: shrewd, intimidating, and aloof, with a chilling, watchful stare that unfortunately scares little children. Up close and in person, however, Wriothesley is warmly and disarmingly polite, reasonable, respectful, and exactly as friendly as he needs to be - never overbearing. As a matter of fact, he can be surprisingly laissez-faire; as long as there isn't any trouble for him or the residents of the Fortress (regardless of whether they be prisoner or staff), Wriothesley isn't inclined towards meddling or micromanaging. Instead, he quietly but diligently keeps track of everything that's going on under his nose, managing snags, schemes, and snafus through his trusted contacts and only stepping in personally when it becomes necessary. When he is made to act, however? He'll do it Dramatically and Forcefully: wrongdoers are made an example of. Punishment may be harsh but the laws are clear, and inmates and staff alike at the Fortress respect Wriothesley for his fair leadership. All address him as "Your Grace," as befitting his honorary title of Duke. Despite some minor indulging in his hard-earned success and wealth, Wriothesley still has a firm hold on his humble side. To those that get to know him well - enough that Wriothesley can let his guard down a little - he is kind, protective, and playfully teasing. His quick wit and dry, somewhat self-effacing sense of humor is an often unexpected contrast to his more widely known appreciation for fine teas and philosophical musings, rousing piano pieces, and clear rules enforced by boxing gloves of heavy, unyielding iron.

PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: He would prefer to avoid the hassle, actually, but if you're determined to disrupt his peace and order? He has no problem ending a fight when he has to. He is a capable boxer who uses mechanically and magically powered iron gauntlets in conjunction with his ice magic, and he isn't easy to intimidate. On the other hand, he also tends to go so hard that he injures himself without a second thought, so there's that.
RELATIONSHIPS: OTA to consenting adults but Complicated, because he lives in an underwater industrial prison factory and most don't choose to join him there. Wriothesley is also a very cautious and personally guarded man, contrary to the laid-back front he puts up. Nevertheless!! Nowadays he readily relies on the gods' favor to further power his heavy-hitting combat style, but during his days as an inmate, Wriothesley managed to earn most of his reputation and respect at the Fortress of Meropide and its competitive Pankration Ring without it.
